Sometimes the response to having received a Lomi-Lomi Lohi massage is as poetic and detailed as:
“For the first time, I was held without being desired, managed, fixed, or treated. I was witnessed. Cradled. Swayed. Allowed to just be, in all my rawness and vulnerability.
Lomi Lohi wasn’t just massage. It was ceremony, rhythm, slowness, awareness. It reached places where words had failed. It gave me back my body, not as a site of work, construction, or pain, but as a temple of retreat.”
Sometimes as simple and direct as:
“That was DEEP!”

Lomi Lomi massage is a wonderful healing gift from the islands of Hawaii.
Lomi Lomi in the Hawaiian language simply means ‘massage’, covering a variety of healing full body massage techniques practiced throughout the islands. Its tradition goes back to ancient times when there were as many different Lomi Lomi massage practices as there were families.
Lomi-Lohi simply means slow lomi, or ‘slow massage’.
Here is a video of lomi-lohi developer and teacher Dan Joy demonstrating our signature slow and aware style of lomi-lomi massage.
This video explains that human skin contains special nerve fibres that only respond to a very specific kind of slow, gentle touch, and that this touch literally tells the nervous system“you are safe.”
These ‘C‑tactile afferent neurons’ fire best when the skin is stroked at about 3 cm per second and at around hand‑warm temperature degrees (32° C).
Lomi-Lohi uses ultra‑slow, hand‑warm strokes designed to target this precise neurological sweet spot for deep down-regulation and a felt sense of safety.
NB: More recent research gives a range about 1–10 cm/s) with a sweet spot for many people in the low single digits.
